WHAT IS MCRC?

Mockingbird Community and Retirement Center is a planned Community where the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, Hard of Hearing and those who depend on sign language for communication shall be able to live when needed upon retirement.

MCRC is planned to be more than just a "Retirement Center." As funding becomes available, MCRC will expand and have recreation facilities, just about everything needed to make our old age life comfortable and also enjoyable.

MCRC is an incorporated non-profit organization with the Tennessee Secretary of State. IRS 501 c 3 status has been received on August 30, 2004.

MCRC has a Board of Directors, Committees and officers constituting of a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. [Back to Top]

WHY MCRC?

At present, our great State of Tennessee does not have anywhere that the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, Hard of hearing and those who depend on sign language can live together.

At this time, throughout Tennessee, there are nursing homes with one or two such individuals who are lonely or isolated, or unable to have a real conversation with others. In most of those homes, none of the staff is able to sign and read sign language when signed to.

There are those who, of necessity, need to have a pen or pencil and pad or piece of paper with them at all times, this being the only way they can be sure they are understood and others, including the staff, understand them.

Note: Not all Tennessee Nursing Homes lack this service.[Back to Top]

WHERE WILL MCRC BE LOCATED?

No decision has been made on this yet. However, because of the need to have this located in an area that is easy to access from all areas of the state and region, the facility will most likely be within the HWY 840 Loop which will surround Nashville and Davidson County.

It is hoped that land will be donated. Just any land will not be accepted. It must meet certain requirements.

For example, it must be large enough to allow expansions and be within reasonable reach of emergency vehicles, hospitals, shopping centers, entertainment, and restaurants. Also, it cannot be in an industrial area which could make the area toxic both in land and air.

Our most ideal place would have trees, flowers, open fields, good roads and not too close to heavy traffic. [Back to Top]

DOES MCRC HAVE A DEVELOPMENT PLAN?

Our plan is to build MCRC in four phases over time. The four phases are:
